Recycled cookware: what and how?
Wondering if recycled products can match the performance of their non-recycled alternative? Or curious about the composition of recycled products? Or maybe you are concerned about the safety of recycled products? Tired of wondering why recycled products seem more expensive than non-recycled items? Let’s discover the world of recycling!
> What are recycled products made of?
Recycled products are made with manufacturing discard or end-consumer waste. Recycling manufacturers are certified to ensure trackability and to verify recycled content. The percentage of recycled content can vary from order to order, depending on the availability on the market. At BergHOFF, our recycled plastic products contain at least 20% recycled content and our recycled metal cookware (stainless steel or aluminum) contain at least 90% recycled end-consumer waste (SDG 12*: Responsible consumptions and production). All meeting strict European standards.
> What about quality?
Collected metal waste is processed by extraction to its basic raw material components, ensuring the same properties, quality or performance as virgin raw material. These recycled components are the foundations for new metal compositions and alloys, identically as virgin alloys. All monitored according the existing European and International metal standards. Plastic waste is sorted, washed and processed into recyclate pellets. To ensure same properties, quality or performance as virgin plastic, some additives are added. All monitored the same way as virgin plastics and tested according to strict European standards for food contact.
> What about sustainability?
Recycling consumes up to 95% less energy compared to mining and the production of raw metal material. Less of our earth’s resources are used, as mining is excluded. For plastics, there is a significant reduction of waste, fossil resources and CO2 emissions up to 85% (SDG 12*: Responsible consumption and production).
> What about costs?
Due to the complexity of recycling, the cost of recycled material is still slightly higher than virgin material. As recycling will become more efficient and virgin material will become scarce, the cost difference is likely to disappear.
